With unemployment rising and incomes squeezed money is tight for many of us these days with few signs that this will change soon. But there are some simple and straightforward things we can all do to make our money go further and to save as much as we can for the future.

As a first step, make a budget and stick to it. Work out how much money you have coming in each month and what you need to spend. Be realistic and allow for a little occasional unplanned spending and even the odd treat, provided its low cost. But avoid impulse buying. This can destroy even the most carefully planned budget.

And cut up the credit card. Unless you can pay your bills off in full each month, this is an expensive way to buy anything.

Check too all the regular payments leaving your account. You might be surprised to find out how much you are paying and what you are paying for on a regular basis.

And any spare money at the end of the month can be transferred to a savings account but only after you have checked that you are getting the best rate on your hard earned cash. There are many websites to check you are getting the best deal.

And while you are reviewing your savings, see if you can get the taxman to help you. If you are not a tax payer make sure you have registered to get your interest paid gross. Or if you are, like most of us, required to pay tax, are you fully using your ISA tax allowance which allows you each year to save in an ISA and get interest paid tax free?

Make sure you are taking advantage of as many introductory deals as you can on things like saving, insurance, credit cards, utilities and mobile phones. Don`t be afraid to shop around and move if there are better deals out there. You might find your existing supplier will match any deal. Think too about paying for as much as you can by direct debit. There are normally discounts if you do this and it`s a safe and secure payment method.

You will probably find it cheaper to buy as much as you can online. Check out too the many online sites which offer vouchers and money off coupons for well known High St brands and supermarkets. You can save loads of money using this money off coupons for the things you really really need.

And try haggling. You will be surprised how effective this can be to save money.

Sensible money management and careful budgeting really can make your cash go further. It is not difficult. It is mostly a matter of common sense. And if you think this is the way forward in these trying times, save money will show you how you can be even more sensible.
